Our Feature in Annabelle Magazine!
We're so honored to share that we were recently featured in the September 2021 issue of Annabelle's Beauty Guide! Getting to share with Annabelle readers what we're all about and how our shop (hopefully) reflects our values makes us so incredibly happy. Our interview was published in German, but here is a transcript in English. Happy reading!
Less Is More
Commitment to people and the environment: Lisa Schwander advocates with her skincare shop, Sinless Skincare, against exaggerated beauty rituals and for more conscious consumption.
How were you introduced to the subject of skincare?
I used to live in South Korea where skincare is a huge focus. Gradually, however, I realized that the traditional 10-step Korean skincare routine does more harm than good for the skin.
What exactly is the problem?
It sounds strange coming from someone who owns an online skincare shop, but in my opinion there are way too many skincare brands and products. This leads to aggressive marketing, which makes consumers believe that they need all of these products.
What effects does this have on the skin?
The skin's delicate microbiome, and thus the skin barrier, is compromised when we use too many skincare products. Over-exfoliation, over-cleansing, combining too many active ingredients, and alcohol-based toners strip the skin of its natural oils. All of this leads to problems such as acne and increased skin sensitivity.
A conscious use of skincare also has other advantages...
Yes, and they are very close to my heart. Everyone knows how much plastic waste is produced by the beauty industry. Conscious consumerism is healthier overall for the planet. My husband and I live by the motto "less is more". With skinimalism, not only will one have healthier skin, but a healthier planet - and mind.
Can you explain what you mean by that?
Consumers are overwhelmed by the fact that there is always something new or supposedly better, which can lead to a kind of burnout. We don't want to be a shop that contributes to that. Therefore, we offer a few carefully selected brands that are in line with our values, as well as a reasonable selection of products for each skin type. And that's it.
If not for word-count limits, we could have said a lot more on this topic. You can check out our other blog posts to get more insight into these issues. And let us know in the comments what your thoughts are on skinimalism! ❤️
